Is this the end of Facebook for business?

Did you realise Facebook users were neurotic?

I was listening to a podcast of the truly excellent BBC Click radio programme on the World Service the other day and there was a fascinating item on the psychological profile of social networking users. The source material was a blog post entitled “Facebook or Twitter: What does your choice of social network say about you?

There are references in the post to previous research that shows Facebook users tend to be more sociable, and neurotic! Another good round up on the personality profile of social networking users can be found in Lauren L. Gundrum’s paper “Online Social NetworkingOnline Social Networking: Why Does Everyone Do It?

Read the source material for the detail, but the take-away was that Facebook users are more sociable and neurotic than Twitter users but that Twitter is more about sharing and exchanging information.

How is this relevant for business marketeers?

Research like this is important if you are using Social Networking as part of your marketing mix and investing your time and money preparing content for these networks (and all the others). I don’t know about you, but my market is not neurotic sociopaths, so I won’t be spending too much time marketing my business on Facebook 🙂
